Strongly Worded Letter has decided to get all up in my grillwork about the Cash for Clunkers program; SWL is a fan, Mellowcat is not.  He counters my fact-free opinion with some statistics showing that the program is resulting in real environmental benefits.  Left out of the equation are the environmental costs in manufacturing and recycling cars – generally thought to account for 15% of the total energy use associated with a car.  That’s the only data point that I could come up with.  My main objection was (and remains) that this is a yet another “bubble” in the overall economy – and one that targets and rewards the worst offenders among consumers.  I look forward to the Largesse for Largies program, which will let citizens turn in Big Gulps in exchange for a free Diet Pepsi.
