We’re undergoing an ant assault outside the house.  One area that’s of particular concern is the utility yard, where we keep the trash can and recycling bins.  There’s a 24 hour a day Ant Party going on back there.  I don’t want to use anything that might harm other bugs or animals, and so I’m trying out Diatomaceous Earth – it’s made up of fossilized diatoms, and it is supposed to play havoc with the insect exoskeleton, causing them to dehydrate.  Hate to do this to the little guys, but I also hate lifting the lid of the trash can after dark and having my hand covered in ants.  But they appear to be safe for now; my initial application of DE has been ineffective – I see the ants are just walking right past it.
