I’m on the horns of a dilemma regarding a book. I started reading this based on a recommendation of a co-worker, who said it was similar to another book we’d both read, Arthur Phillips’ Prague. But it’s nothing like that book, as it turns out. The outline of the story sounds like it would be interesting to me; bookselling, cryptography, murder! Maybe it’s because I’ve just finished another book by Phillips, which was almost as good as Prague, and this one pales in comparison. The characters in Prague have their faults and make mistakes, but you can tell the author has an affection for them. Not so with this book I have going now. The characters have their issues, but it’s the author that comes across as a jerk. I don’t know that I’ve read another book where I’ve disliked the author quite as much. Actually, I usually don’t even think that much about the author. Should I keep going, and see if a good story overrides my problem with the writer?
