ELIOT KAMENITZ / THE TIMES PICAYUNE Senator Mary Landrieu, center, flanked by Congressmen Joseph Cao and Steve Scalise testify befores the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Spill and Offshore Drilling meeting at the Riverside Hilton on Monday, July 12, 2010. She urged to keep the government from putting a moratorium on Gulf of Mexico drilling.

While the Commission tries to figure out what went wrong at the Macondo well, they’re consuming water from single-use PET plastic bottles.  They’re not alone; 1500 bottles of water are consumed in the US every second.  We were thirsty!  Of the 50 billion bottles used every year, 40 billion end up in landfills, or make their way through storm drains out to the sea.  If we end needing to find an extra 1.5 million barrels of oil every year, we might consider banning plastic water bottles.
