We went about 7 miles on the Skyline Trail yesterday with full backpacking gear. Still figuring out new ways to adjust the packs.  We also tested a new trail lunch item; Resident Expert’s Bear Baiter Wraps.  They’re like jet fuel for the recreational hiker.

  1. How long did it take you to cover 7 miles with a full pack? That might be a good guide for our 1st day in Lyell Canyon.

    1. Out and back, it took about 3.5 hours. We stopped a couple of times for maybe a total of 20 minutes. I was surprised how fast we went – especially on the way back. We got back to the car at sunset, so we had some motivation to move along briskly. But the walking staffs made the ups and downs easier, and we’re definitely getting more used to the packs; wearing them for extended periods, and figuring out all the little adjustments you can make with them. We should have plenty of time for breaks and dawdling on this trip, based on these test runs. Even at 1mph we’d have extra time in the day.
