When we were at Bearpaw High Sierra Camp, some campers happened to mention Hurricane Irene and the East Coast earthquake to the people working there.  The camp staff is there for a couple of months during the summer, and they don’t have regular Internet or phone access, and so it wasn’t all that surprising that they hadn’t heard of either event.  But I was somewhat envious of that isolation.  I mean, why would I need to know about Hurricane Irene?  The Mellowcat steered clear of the junk-food information offered by television, but it wasn’t possible to avoid the Hurricane and earthquake news entirely.  I’m going to declare my peace of mind a Federal disaster area.
