Remember the movie Airport? I’ve been watching bits of it on Netflix the past few nights. I have about a half hour of it remaining, which I should be able to get through tonight. If you haven’t seen it since it came out 40 years ago, you should check it out. Now that everybody’s bailed out of Netflix, the video streaming works much better. This is a great film for those interested in airport noise abatement issues, the durability of Boeing products, and the stark decline in the experience of air travel since deregulation. Also, people used to dress nicely to go on planes. If they had a special edition of this movie without Helen Hayes, it would be so much better. I don’t know if it was Ms. Hayes that was bugging me, or the background music they play whenever she’s on screen, but it’s the main reason I’ve had to watch the movie in installments. Just can’t handle it. Did you know that Airport was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture? (Patton won.) It did garner one Oscar. You guessed it: Helen Hayes won, for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
